Coroner IDs Man Fatally Shot By Yorkville Officer

Police said the man, 68, became uncooperative and pulled out a handgun during a medical call.

YORKVILLE, IL — A Yorkville police officer who originally responded to a medical call just after 8:30 p.m. Monday fatally shot a man after he pulled out a handgun, according to a news release. Police and Bristol Kendall EMS responded to a home in the 200 block of Leisure Street at 8:37 p.m., according to police.

Minutes after the officer and paramedics arrived, police said the man who was being treated became uncooperative and "produced a handgun." According to police, at around 8:50 p.m, the officer, fearing for his own safety and the safety of the other occupants of the home, discharged his gun, hitting the man.

The officer and paramedics rendered aid, but the man died of his injuries. The Kendall County Coroner's Office identified the man as Marc Barnhart, 68.

No one else was injured in the incident, and a gun was recovered at the scene.

Police said the officer, who has been with the Yorkville Police Department for two years, has no other officer-involved shooting incidents.

Yorkville police requested the shooting be investigated by the Illinois State Police Division of

Criminal Investigation pursuant to the State of Illinois’ Police and Community Relations
Improvement Act.
