911 Call Released From Lion Attack That Killed IU Grad

The 911 call took place after the 22-year-old New Palestine native was attacked by a lion while working at a North Carolina wildlife center.

BURLINGTON, NC β€” Officials released audio from a 911 call made Sunday, Dec. 30 after a lion fatally attacked an Indiana native who was interning at the Conservators Center in Burlington, North Carolina. The Associated Press recently reported Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine and a recent Indiana University graduate, was helping do some routine cleaning at the wildlife center when a lion attacked and killed her, authorities said.

The 911 call was published Wednesday, Jan. 2 by The News & Observer, and was made by a woman identified during the call as Julie. During the call, Julie and the dispatcher can be heard calmly exchanging directions and information, including Julie telling the dispatcher the person (Black) was "incapacitated."

The woman can also be heard during the call telling the dispatcher that the lion "is contained," and the dispatcher said emergency personnel were already on their way.

While the attack is still being investigated, Black is being remembered for her passionate pursuit of a career working with animals.

On Monday, the center gave details about the lion in a statement.

"Our lion, Matthai, was euthanized by first responders by necessity," the statement said. "Matthai was a 14-year-old male who was born at the Conservators Center shortly after his mother was placed with us following a USDA-assisted confiscation in 2004."
