Indianapolis Sets Homicide Record For Third Consecutive Year

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who was fatally shot early Monday on the city's northwest side brings this year's murder toll to 150, breaking the record of 149 set in 2016.

Indianapolis's latest shooting was reported shortly after midnight on Monday inside of an apartment in the 5300 block of Butler Terrace, according to the Indy Channel. The victim was 25-year-old Walter Benyon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigators did not share a motive or suspect in the case. The did confirm that the homicide marked the city's 150th of the year.

"That gives 2017 the dubious distinction of being the third year in a row in which Indianapolis has set a homicide record, and the seventh in a row in which homicides have increased in the city," Indy Channel reported.
