IPS Board To Vote On Teacher Raises, Interim Superintendent Pay

According to report, if contract approved this would be the largest pay raise in years for IPS educators.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN β€” An Indianapolis Public Schools board meeting is expected to take place Thursday night with a vote on teacher raises at the forefront, according to several reports. This comes a week after the IPS teachers' union ratified a contract that would increase teacher pay by three to nine percent, WXIN reported.

If the contract is approved by IPS commissioners, this would be the largest raise for this group of teachers in years, stemming from the IPS administration's goal to make the district more competitive when it comes to teacher pay. To qualify for the raises, teachers must be rated effective or highly effective.

The district estimates the raises and benefits would mean a $5.2 million investment. According to WXIN, IPS leaders said the more than $5 million investment estimated for the raises and benefits would come from the district's current funding, not referendum.

Thursday's meeting is also set to include a vote on additional pay for Superintendent Lewis Ferebee, which includes performance pay, nearly two weeks before he leaves IPS to take on the role of chancellor of the public school system in Washington, D.C.

Chalkbeat reported the IPS board is also expected to vote on a contract with the district's interim-superintendent Aleesia Johnson, who takes over Ferebee's role on Jan. 7.
