  1. James Spight, a 21-year-old Chicago man, is facing multiple felony charges related to a shooting incident on the north end of Lafayette. The incident occurred when a group of women were engaged in a fight in a church parking lot on Kossuth Street on Sep. 3. Spight allegedly approached the group and fired shots into the air and at a vehicle. He was subsequently identified through security footage and was arrested at a residence on South 30th Street, where a loaded Glock handgun was discovered under a dresser. Spight is now facing formal charges, including criminal recklessness, attempted battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation, and pointing a firearm. (wlfi.com)
  2. Garry Cecil Ferrell II, the nearby Frankfort "NHK Factory killer," has been sentenced to 110 years in prison for the murders of his ex-girlfriend, Promise Mays, and her grandmother, Pamela Sledd. Ferrell will need to serve at least 75 percent of his sentence before being eligible for release, and with pretrial detention credit, he has approximately 80 years left to serve, making him 108 years old if ever released. The judge considered factors such as Ferrell's cooperation with the authorities, his acceptance of responsibility, and his intellectual disability and childhood trauma in determining the sentence. 3. Columbian Park Zoo is offering a Members-Only presale for Boo at the Zoo tickets, allowing members to save 15 percent using a special code until Sep. 24. Afterward, general public sales will begin on Sep. 25, with ticket prices set at $8 online and $10 at the gate for the event, which runs from Oct. 20-22 from 3:30-7:30 p.m. The fundraiser supports the Lafayette Parks Foundation and helps fund improvements, projects, and educational programs at the Columbian Park Zoo.
