1. Amtrak mechanical issues hobble departing Chicago trains (trains.com) — If you’re catching Amtrak in South Bend, be aware that a recent eastbound train from Chicago arrived more than six hours late after mechanical problems and a long delay near Hammond-Whiting. The report ties this disruption to broader issues with Amtrak’s aging fleet, which also caused cancellations and substitute buses on other long-distance routes out of Chicago.
   

2. Pokagon Band doctor honored with award by Indiana University School of Medicine (wcsy.com) — A Pokagon Band physician who trained at Indiana University School of Medicine–South Bend has been honored with the school’s 2025 Outstanding Physician Award for his work serving tribal citizens and the surrounding community. Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Morris now directs Pokagon Health Services, teaches family medicine residents connected to Memorial Hospital, and credits South Bend’s medical community for supporting his career and this recognition.
   

3. Artist creates Notre Dame's logo with reclaimed wood (wsbt.com) — A striking new Notre Dame basketball logo made from reclaimed South Bend wood now hangs at Purcell Pavilion’s section 107 entrance. Artist Ike Wynter, known for his NFL Draft work, repurposed materials from old campus basketball courts and football stadium concession stands to create the Leprechaun Basketball Art.
   

4. Gov. Braun discusses data centers, redistricting during South Bend visit (wndu.com) — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun used a South Bend visit to defend data center development, arguing it can bring high-paying jobs and lower property taxes if projects are properly vetted. He also backed a pending redistricting bill, criticizing Democratic opposition and framing it as an effort to “level the playing field” on gerrymandering.
