Charge In Iowa City Stabbing Upgraded To Murder

The victim died o complications of blunt-force injury, three weeks after being stabbed, police say.

IOWA CITY, IA — A man being held on a willful injury charge following a Nov. 13 stabbing in Iowa City will instead be tried for first-degree murder after the victim died and an autopsy report classified the death as a homicide. Flannery Huston Kennedy-Meier, 30, remains in the Johnson County Jail in connection with the case.

Iowa City police announced today that the Johnson County Attorney’s Office amended the original charge in the case. The victim, Mark A. Meier, 63, of Iowa City died Dec. 4 from injuries he sustained on Nov. 13. On that date, police were called to 1129 Hotz Ave. on a report of a stabbing. During the initial investigation, they took Kennedy-Meier into custody and charged him with willful injury causing serious injury.

A day after Meier's death, an autopsy was conducted by the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s office, which determined the cause of death was complications from blunt-force injury. A report classified the manner of death as a homicide.

The case remains under investigation by the ICPD investigations division.

Bond for Kennedy-Meier has been set at $1 million.
