📰 News we're reading

1. Johnson County to review proposed district map amid new law affecting supervisor elections (cbs2iowa.com) — Johnson County supervisors are reviewing a new district map in Iowa City tonight as they prepare to shift from at-large to district-based elections under a state law targeting university counties. The change could force several current supervisors to run against each other next November. Residents can weigh in at a 5:30 p.m. public hearing at the Health and Human Services Building on South Dubuque Street.

2. Former UI employee sentenced after pleading guilty for diverting university funds (dailyiowan.com) — A former University of Iowa machine shop director has been spared jail time if he completes probation and repays over $173,000, after a years-long fraud scheme that auditors say diverted nearly $1 million from university work. Prosecutors argued the damage to the university and Iowa City community went beyond money, but a Johnson County judge granted deferred judgment, citing the defendant’s age and clean record. The case has already prompted UI to reexamine conflict-of-interest and hiring policies.

3. Saturday multi-vehicle crash near West Branch was classified by officials as Mass Casualty Incident (weareiowa.com) — A massive multi-vehicle crash on I-80 just east of Iowa City was serious enough for officials to classify it as a Mass Casualty Incident, with 40 to 50 people triaged. Iowa City Fire Department joined West Branch and several regional agencies in an all-day response along a six-mile stretch of interstate, underscoring how regional emergencies can quickly draw in Iowa City resources.

4. Curious Iowa: Why is Iowa the ‘Hawkeye State?' (thegazette.com) — Iowa City readers might be surprised that the Hawkeye nickname predates both statehood and the University of Iowa, with roots tied to territorial leaders, Chief Black Hawk, and early newspapers. The story traces how the name evolved from state identity to UI culture, including early mascots like Burch the bear and Herky the Hawk. It highlights several moments when Herky and Hawkeye pride have been on display in Iowa City and beyond.
