Get Out and Vote! Iowa City School Board Election Guide

All the information you need to make your choice on up to three school board members.

It's a big day for the Iowa City School District Tuesday, as nine candidates square off for three seats after what has been a spirited campaign. This new school board will have a lot to say about the future of the district, including how much, if any, they will change the district's plan for future growth that was already approved by the current board this summer.

In any case, whatever your voting choices are, it's important that you get out and vote today. If there's anything you'd like clarified, corrected, or added to this guide let me know.

Here is my coverage from 2011's school board election vote:
McGinness, Swesey, Cook, Fields and Hoelscher Win Iowa City School Board Election

Basics of the Vote

From the County Auditor: Vote at school polling places, which for most voters are different than regular polling places. Find Your Polling Place

The election will be open Tuesday from open 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Sept. 10 election Day in Iowa City.

Here is a link to the auditor's page on the election.

There are nine candidates running in this election for three open spots, meaning you can vote for up to three candidates but you can vote for one or two candidates if you like. The terms are four years long. The candidates are:
  • Tuyet Dorau (incumbent)
  • Karla Cook (incumbent)
  • Gregg Geerdes
  • Phil Hemmingway
  • Chris Lynch
  • Jason T. Lewis
  • Jim Tate
  • Brian R. Kirschling
  • Sara Barron
There is also a vote to see if voters will approve two property tax levies: The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy and the Kirkwood Community College Levy.

More on these levies in this Press-Citizen article.
