'Moment of Mourning' to be Held in Iowa City Next Week for Trayvon Martin

Media Release

A gathering to reflect on racial injustice, especially the impact of racism on black males, will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 6:00 pm in the Pedestrian Mall.

The event, organized by community members in response to the not-guilty verdict in the trial of Trayvon Martin's killer George Zimmerman, will be a time for quiet reflection and community solidarity.

Rather than a rally or a protest, organizers hope to gather community members together as a call to action and as a "moment of mourning."

A statement from the organizers said, "It is a call to action for every member of the community to accept responsibility for turning back the tide of profiling and systemic disenfranchisement African American males face in their daily lives."

The statement continued, "This is a call to action for our entire community, for young people, the clergy, advocates for equality, community leaders, business leaders, local and state policy makers, and enforcers of policy. One community, one voice, one cry…in unison."
