Police: Father and Son Get Into Brawl Following In-Car Dispute

A verbal dispute allegedly led to the son placing his father into a headlock, police say.


Fathers, sons, and driving don't always work out well together.

An Iowa City man was charged with misdemeanor assault after a verbal dispute with his father allegedly turned physical Tuesday morning.

According to Iowa City Police complaints, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, at the intersection of Summit Street and Sheridan Avenue, Dennis Michael Delaney, 44, of Iowa City was riding in a vehicle in his father when his father stopped the car and pulled off the road. 

At this point, police say a verbal and physical dispute ensued, with Delaney allegedly pulling his father's hair, putting his father into a headlock, and hitting him in the face several times, causing lacerations. When questioned by police, Delaney stated the fight had been started by his father, who had punched him in the shoulder. He was also bitten by his father on his forearm during the dispute.

Delaney was charged with assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. He was charged and released from the Johnson County Jail this morning, according to online jail records.
