Severe Heat Expected to Stay Through Friday: Some Safety Tips

The National Weather Service is indicating severe heat should stay in the area through Friday. Here are some tips about staying safe in the extreme heat.

It's a good day for air conditioning as temperatures are expected to soar across Iowa today and the next few days.

The National Weather Service has issued a weather statement for much of Eastern Iowa including Johnson County, warning of heat indexes nearing 100 degrees.

A large area of high pressure covering much of the eastern united states will keep a hot and humid air mass over southern wisconsin into friday. Highs today through thursday will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s...With heat index values of 94 to 99. Some locally higher values are possible in rural areas where fields of maturing crops add moisture to the air. The prolonged nature of this heat wave may cause an increase in heat related illnesses as the week progresses. The heat can be most stressful on small children...The elderly...Or those with medical conditions. Leaving a child or a pet in an enclosed vehicle...Even for a short time...Can be deadly.

Safety tips for heat wave

Extreme heat poses many dangers, such as heat stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion, according to the American Red Cross.

Here are some tips for keeping safe when temps get hot hot hot:

  • Stay hydrated.
  • Avoid caffeine or alcohol.
  • Have small meals and eat more often.
  • Stay indoors.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Take frequent breaks if you have to be outside.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Check on pets frequently.
