APG Recognized As Earth Day Champion

has been recognized as an Earth Day Champion for reducing carbon emissions and energy waste.

The Earth Day Champions list, compiled by Johnson Controls, ranked APG No.3 on the list after it reduced its carbon footprint by more than 24,499 metric tons, according to a statement. That reduction, the statement said, would be the equivalent of planting 5,224 acres of pine forest.

Much of the improvements are credited to the modernization of hundreds of buildings on the 72,500-acre military installation.

The BRAC movement, , completed the transition of APG from an active solider station to a center for science and technology support for the military.

APG has a goal of reducing energy consumption by 30 percent by 2015.

According to a statement from Johnson Controls, a partnership between the company and APG is anticipated to save the Army $134 million in energy costs by 2030. The partnership is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26,500 tons a year, according to the statement.
