$150K Garbage Truck Catches Fire At Aberdeen Proving Ground-Owned Property

CHURCHVILLE, MD — A garbage truck caught on fire Saturday morning while parked on Aberdeen Proving Ground property, officials say.

The incident happened around 9:08 a.m. Dec. 27 at 775 Priestford Road in Churchville at the Churchville Test Area, which is a United States Army facility of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, according to the Maryland State Office of the Fire Marshal.

The truck was a 2018 Peterbilt garbage truck. The vehicle fire was noticed by a passerby and more than a dozen firefighters with the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company responded to the call for help. They spent 10 minutes battling the blaze before gaining control. While no federal government property was damaged, the truck's engine compartment caught fire at the APG property, according to the state fire marshal's office.

The truck's estimated loss has been valued at $150,000.
