APG Hosting Armed Forces Week

Aberdeen Proving Ground will bring back Armed Forces Day, expanding it for a week.

is bringing back a classic—and expanding upon it.

APG will host Armed Forces Week, a modernized tune-up to the popular Armed Forces Day celebrations that used to be held on the post, beginning on May 14.

The theme of the week will be "Hometown Heroes," honoring members of the post and off-post community.

"This gives us a chance to honor our local heroes and recognize them in a public forum," Capt. Malikah McCormick, commander, APG Garrison HHC and coordinator for the Armed Forces Week events, said in a statement.

A hero will be honored at each event throughout the week.

Visitors without a government ID may attend festivities by accessing Aberdeen Proving Ground via MD Route 715. Visitors must have a photo ID and drivers must have a driver's license and vehicle registration.

The week will culminate in a live fire demonstration on May 19, bringing back one of the long-standing favorites from yesteryear. Tickets for the live fire event are sold out.

Events begin with the May 14 Armed Forces Day Golf Tournament at Ruggles. Following a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m., the tournament begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Veterans will be honored with a luncheon on May 15 at Top of the Bay.

An invitation-only Gold Star Family Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. on May 16. At 9 a.m. on May 16, festivities will begin on the APG museum grounds, with demonstrations and displays from a number of organizations. There will be live music and food on site, as well.

The Harford County Chamber of Commerce will host the Military Appreciation Luncheon on May 17 at the Richlin Ballroom.

A 10K run and two mile fun run will be held early on April 19 at the APG Athletic Center. The 10K run begins at 8 a.m., the fun run at 8:30 a.m.
