4 MD Cities Among Moldiest In The U.S., New Study Claims

A new study revealed the 150 U.S. cities where residents are most vulnerable to mold's unhealthy effects. See which MD cities made the list.

MARYLAND — Four Maryland cities are among those in the United States where residents are most vulnerable to mold and its dangerous effects on health, according to a new analysis.

A study conducted by technology company Deve surveyed 3,000 homeowners in the United States and asked them if they’ve experienced mold in their homes over the past year. Researchers also looked at environmental data from sources including the National Weather Service and local climate offices.

The results revealed the 150 U.S. cities where residents are most vulnerable to mold’s unhealthy effects.

"Hidden mold is silently threatening homes across America — even in cities you'd least suspect," Deve researchers said. "While many dismiss it as a mere nuisance, mold exposure can actually have devastating health consequences, from chronic skin conditions to dangerous respiratory infections and potentially life-threatening lung inflammation."

Here are the Maryland cities that made the list and why, according to Deve:

Baltimore (No. 67): "Baltimore’s summer humidity and frequent rainfall create a high risk of mold, particularly in older buildings with poor drainage or ventilation. Managing moisture is key to avoiding persistent issues in this historic city."

Frederick (No. 76): "Frederick’s humid summers, regular rainfall, and winter snowfall contribute to indoor moisture issues. Shaded or enclosed areas are particularly susceptible to mold growth if not carefully monitored."

Rockville (No. 132): "Rockville experiences high humidity and summer rainfall, which can lead to indoor moisture problems. Proper ventilation and regular maintenance are essential to keeping mold at bay."

Annapolis (No. 133): "Annapolis’ coastal climate and consistently high humidity make homes prone to mold. Areas with poor ventilation or near water sources are especially vulnerable to dampness."

Florida dominated the worst cities on the list, claiming six of the top 10 spots. Louisiana and Mississippi are heavy hitters on the moldiest cities list due to flooding risks and swampy surroundings.
