MARYLAND — Maryland prosecutors indicted seven people this week after authorities said they stole more than $155,000 from dozens of victims through a criminal practice known as "bank jugging."

Each defendant was indicted on multiple charges, including participation in a criminal gang, attempted murder, armed carjacking, armed robbery, assault and firearms-related counts, Attorney General Anthony Brown announced Friday.

Brown said the individuals were part of two criminal organizations whose primary objective was to rob victims who had recently left a bank or ATM, a practice known as “bank jugging.”

Prosecutors said the crimes occurred from August 2023 to July 2024 in Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Howard, Charles and Montgomery counties. The defendants targeted multiple banks, including Navy Federal Credit Union, Bank of America, Capitol One and Wells Fargo.

According to investigators, the defendants would identify a victim leaving a bank or ATM. They would then approach the victim, point a gun at or attack them, and announce the robbery.

Prosecutors said one group was responsible for 20 robberies and attempted robberies between August 2023 and January 2024. After local police and federal agents intervened and arrested members of the first organization, authorities said a second organization formed and carried out 14 robberies and attempted robberies between May 2024 and July 2024.

In total, the groups stole more than $155,000 from at least 34 victims, prosecutors said.

At times, prosecutors said members of the criminal organizations would shoot at or near victims to force them into giving them money. On two occasions, they fired a gun at the victims as they attempted to flee, authorities said.

This second group is also alleged to have targeted people who recently left a bank and used guns and threats of violence to force victims to surrender their money and other property. Prosecutors said the group would point firearms at the victims, often at their head, and demand money. Members of the group also threatened to shoot or kill the victim, and on one occasion, assaulted the victim by punching them and striking them with their guns, authorities said.

Those indicted include:

  • Tyriq Jayron Walker, 25, of Upper Marlboro
  • Gary Gerald Cloutterbuck, 25, of Washington, D.C.
  • Zavier Emmanuel Williams, 25, of Upper Marlboro
  • Robert Darrell Hill, 23, of White Plains
  • Dujuan Kenneth Smalls, 20, of Upper Marlboro
  • Roland Adrian Thompson, 22, of Washington, D.C.
  • Jeremy Adarryn Manago, 19, of Capitol Heights

“For nearly a year, these suspects terrorized and traumatized hardworking Marylanders who were just trying to run a simple errand and take money out of the bank,” Attorney General Brown said in a statement.

He continued, “These indictments demonstrate our office’s commitment to dismantling violent crime rings, protecting Marylanders, and doing everything in our power to make Maryland a safe place to live, work and play.”
