8 MD Hospitals Ranked Among Nation's Best: US News

These eight Maryland hospitals were ranked among the nation's best. One medical center was ranked in the top 20 nationwide.

MARYLAND — With expertise across multiple specialty areas, Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Hospital is among the 20 best in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Hospitals ranking released Tuesday.

For its 35th annual report, U.S. News evaluated more than 5,000 hospitals based on their performance across 30 medical and surgical services.

On top of its honor roll distinction, Johns Hopkins was named the fifth-best neurology and neurosurgery hospital nationwide.

U.S. News also ranked the top regional hospitals in the Baltimore metropolitan area:

  • 1 - Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • 2 - University of Maryland Medical Center
  • 3 - University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center
  • 4 - MedStar Union Memorial Hospital
  • 5 - University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center
  • 6 - Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center

Those hospitals are among the 466 Best Regional Hospitals in the country, according to U.S. News.

U.S. News ranked these as the best hospitals overall in Maryland.

  • 1 - Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  • 2 - University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore
  • 3 - University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson
  • 4 - MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore
  • 5 (Tie) - University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Glen Burnie
  • 5 (Tie) - TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, Salisbury
  • 7 - Johns Hopkins Medicine-Suburban Hospital, Bethesda
  • 8 - Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis

Three of Maryland's top five hospitals are part of the University of Maryland Medical System.

These were the top hospitals in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area:

  • 1 (Tie) - MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
  • 1 (Tie) - Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church
  • 3 - MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
  • 4 (Tie) - George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
  • 4 (Tie) - Johns Hopkins Medicine-Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, D.C.
  • 4 (Tie) - Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington
  • 7 - Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg
  • 8 - Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax

For the first time this year, U.S. News also identified 98 hospitals across the country for their success in caring for patients from historically underserved communities. In Maryland, the following facilities were recognized among the Best Hospitals for Equitable Access:

  • Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
  • Ascension St. Agnes Hospital
  • MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center

Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery

  1. Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Ohio
  2. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York City
  3. Mayo Clinic-Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota
  4. Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City
  5. New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell, New York City

Neurology & Neurosurgery

  1. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York City
  2. Mayo Clinic-Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota
  3. UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco

To calculate the 2024-2025 Best Hospitals for the Honor Roll, specialty and region, U.S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures. Data came from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists. The Procedures & Conditions ratings are based entirely on objective patient care measures.
