Annapolis Could Host Olympic Events if DC Lands 2024 Summer Games
A committee wants D.C. to be the next host of the 2024 Olympics, which could mean some events would be in Annapolis.
An exploratory committee wants Washington D.C. to be the home of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, and if so, it could mean some events would take place in Annapolis.
DC 2024, a nonprofit exploratory committee, announced its plan this week to raise $3 million to $5 million in the next two years as it vies for the approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee, according to the Washington Business Journal.
The bid would be regional, with potential venues spread between Maryland and Virginia, including Baltimore and Annapolis.
Other cities considering joining the mix are Atlanta, Boston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The U.S. Olympic Committee will select which American city will go into the running in 2015. Then that city will compete with other nations' top choices before the International Olympic Committee, which would pick the 2024 host city in 2017.
During the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angelas, Annapolis hosted first-round soccer matches at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. But the waterfront afforded to Annapolis makes it a likely fit for water sports should D.C. get the Olympic bid.
