First responders said they arrived to find flames in the attic and heavy smoke on the balcony of the two-story building.

About 45 firefighters controlled the scene in roughly 45 minutes, the release said.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department and the Naval Support Activity Annapolis Fire Department also assisted in the one-alarm blaze.

Investigators said the building's smoke detectors worked properly.
