Anne Arundel School Board Appointment Commission Meeting Set For June 6

The commission will appoint individuals to fill vacancies on the Board of Education through the appointed to elected transition process.

From Anne Arundel Public Schools: The School Board Appointment Commission of Anne Arundel County will hold its first meeting at 7 p.m. on June 6, 2017, in the Board Room of the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The 13-member commission is charged with appointing individuals to fill vacancies on the Board of Education as the Board transitions from an entirely appointed Board to one that is entirely elected. The Board currently has one vacant seat, an at-large position that has been unoccupied since the resignation of Tom Frank in February.

The commission was created by the General Assembly through the passage of House Bill 716. Governor Larry Hogan signed the bill into law on May 4, 2017, and it took effect on June 1, 2017.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the commission will elect its leadership and discuss changes to bylaws of its predecessor, the School Board Nominating Commission of Anne Arundel County, that resulted from the enactment of HB716. The commission also may choose to discuss procedures for filling the current vacancy on the Board.

The meeting will be open to the public and televised live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Meetings are also broadcast on the internet here.
