Federal Closure Cancels Some Naval Academy Classes

The federal closure has sunk its claws into classes at the U.S. Naval Academy, with some being canceled, with others minimally staffed.

Academy spokesman Commander John Schofield said classes taught by civilian professors that cannot find substitutions will be canceled. Some labs, such as chemistry, physics and engineering are canceled, along with language classes such as Arabic and some sections of Chinese, he said.

The academy did not provide Patch with a total number of canceled classes.

Schofield said the academy would remain open to the public during the closure, but there would be "drastic reductions in services available."

The fate of special events, such as the Navy-Air Force game scheduled for Saturday, are unknown at the moment, according to Schofield. 

"At this time we are unaware of what the effect of the government shutdown will be on specific events," Schofield said.
