Foundation Laid for 'Foot Soldiers' Memorial

Wednesday will see the unveiling of a memorial for Annapolis participants of the 1963 March on Washington, and work has begun in full on the project at Whitmore Park.

Wednesday is also the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, in which thousands gathered atn the nation's capital to protest for civil and economic rights for African Americans. The gathering culminated in a famous speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To commemorate this milestone, the Annapolis-based Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Committee, Inc. will unveil the nation’s first memorial to the 250,000 “foot soldiers” of the march.

The Civil Rights Foot Soldiers Memorial includes the names of more than 500 foot soldiers from Anne Arundel County.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at Whitmore Park in Annapolis, located on the corner of Clay and Cavert Streets, the site of a bus depot from which Annapolis residents traveled to the march.
