UPDATE: Hillsmere Elementary Secured After Police Search for Suspicious Person

A man arrived outside the school asking for a tour, raising the suspicion of school administrators.

Updated (12:13 p.m.)—The "secure the building" status was removed just after noon Wednesday, according to a school system spokesman.

Hillsmere Elementary School officials secured the school Wednesday morning while police searched the area for a suspicious person.

Under “secure the building” status,  no one is allowed to enter or leave the building, but indoor activities continue as scheduled, according to Bob Mosier, spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Public School System.

The secure status was engaged Wednesday morning after an elderly man arrived outside the school. The same man had visited the school Tuesday, asking to enter the school for a tour.

“He returned early this morning, raising the suspicion of administrators, who called police,” Mosier wrote in an email to Patch. “There is no danger to students or staff and the ‘secure the building’ status is precautionary.”

The man left before police arrived, according to Anne Arundel County Police Department spokesman Justin Mulcahy, but the search continues.

Parents were sent notifications about the morning's incident, Mosier said.
