How To Check If Maryland Owes You Money In 2025

The Maryland Comptroller's Office holds millions of dollars in unclaimed assets. Here's how residents can search for and claim their money.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Money and the rights to valuables that belong to Marylanders may be sitting in government accounts, but it's up to you to claim your property.

The state of Maryland annually updates its database of assets under state control, where they remain until they are claimed by the owner or that person's heirs. Over the years, the state has brought in more than $1 billion in unclaimed property from businesses and organizations and returned $60 million to the rightful owners in 2024.

Many people who have unclaimed cash don't realize it, whether it's money owed from pension funds, business refunds or other sources.

Individuals and businesses can search Maryland's Unclaimed Property database.

For more than 50 years, Maryland has received and safeguarded forgotten funds, including uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, stocks, dividends, financial accounts, savings bonds, and valuable items like jewelry left in forgotten safety deposit boxes.

"The owners or their legitimate heirs can claim the funds at any time. There is no statute of limitations. You can find out if the Comptroller's Office is holding property for you by checking our website. You may also conduct a nationwide search by state using the NAUPA and MissingMoney websites," the agency previously said.

Residents can also search on the Maryland comptroller's website using their first and last name. Enter the first and last name in the appropriate boxes below and click on the "Submit" button. If you file a property claim, you will be required to submit documents to verify your identity.

Anyone who locates their name or that of a family member on the list should contact the comptroller's office at 410-767-1700 or toll-free at 1-800-782-7383 or by email at unclaim@marylandtaxes.gov with questions about their lost property.

The U.S. government lacks a central website to find unclaimed funds. To search for unclaimed money that may be lying in a different state's treasury, check this list of treasurer's offices.

If you don't have money lying in the state treasury, the government also suggests checking for unclaimed funds from bank failures or unclaimed deposits from credit union closures. You could also check for unclaimed or undelivered tax refunds or a refund from an FHA-insured mortgage.

Finally, you can check for unclaimed back wages, pension money or life insurance funds. Here is how to find out how to search for these unclaimed funds.
