NBC Washington reported, citing unnamed sources, that a midshipman sheltering in place mistook a law enforcement officer as a threat and hit them with a training weapon. Police then shot the student, who was flown to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

The Baltimore Banner said investigators are still working to determine how the midshipman was shot.

Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman thanked law enforcement for taking the threat seriously.

"My thoughts are with all the students and staff who had to experience tonight's lockdown at the Naval Academy. I am keeping the individual who was injured in my prayers and wishing them a swift and full recovery," Pittman said. "While there was thankfully no active shooter threat, I understand the fear that situations like these cause in our community."

Pittman encouraged those affected by the incident to seek out the support they need. The county's warmline is available 24/7 at 410-768-5522.

Gov. Wes Moore's office said earlier in the evening that there was no threat to students. The facility was on lockdown as a precaution, according to an alert from the city.

The message to residents said: "Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy. The base is on lockdown out of an abundance of caution."

In a statement, the governor's office told WBAL-TV: "In working with local, state, and federal law enforcement authorities, there is currently no credible threat to the Naval Academy."

"We cannot confirm an active threat, but are searching the area out of an abundance of caution," said Kortlan Jackson, a spokesperson for the Annapolis Police Department, told WBAL.

Aerial video from WBAL showed people running into a building at the Naval Academy with their hands in the air.

Faculty, students and staff were urged to shelter in place.

Naval Support Activity Annapolis is also on lockdown, a Navy official confirmed to USNI News.
