Arrest In Fatal Shooting Made Weeks After Annapolis Homicide: Police

A fatal shooting suspect was on the run for six weeks. Police said they found and arrested the Annapolis man.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis man on the run was charged with murder six weeks after a fatal shooting, police said Thursday.

Officers said they arrested William Delonte Hairston, 33, in the April 23 death of Gregory Antonio Wells, 37.

Court records show that Hairston was charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, using a firearm in a violent crime and having a loaded handgun on his person.

Authorities named Hairston as the suspect the day after the shooting. Detectives have been looking for him ever since.

Hairston lives in the same block as the crime scene, his case file says.

Investigators said they eventually found him with the help of the Prince George's County Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

A judge on Thursday ordered Hairston to be held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Annapolis until his trial, court records say.

Police said stationary units in the area heard gunshots around 11:09 p.m. Officers were guided to the 1300 block of Tyler Avenue, located in the Robinwood community, and found Wells suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police and medics from the Annapolis Fire Department attempted life-saving measures. Wells was later pronounced dead at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, authorities said.

"Our hearts are heavy with the loss of life in our community today, and we must address the root causes of violence in our city. That is to stop the easy access to firearms, so that we can prevent future tragedies," Annapolis Police Chief Ed Jackson said in a statement after the shooting. "We stand with the victim's family, and I assure them that we will dedicate every resource to ensuring justice is served. This loss affects us all, and we are committed to providing support and answers as we move forward."
