"The City of Annapolis and Annapolis Parking vendors do not send notices via email or text for unpaid tickets or fines. Tickets are either put on the windshield of a vehicle or are mailed to the registered owner," city spokesperson Mitchelle Stephenson said in a Friday press release.

Anybody receiving the scam texts should not click the link or provide any information, Stephenson said.

"We believe these texts to be phishing and not a hack because we are getting reports from outside of Annapolis (California, North Carolina, Nebraska, etc.). Locals are definitely getting it, but plenty are arriving with people who have never even visited Annapolis," Stephenson said.

Anybody who thinks they may have been scammed should call the Annapolis Police Department at 410-268-4141.
