Helicopter Crash Off Kent Island; Crews Searching Chesapeake Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard said authorities are searching for two men in the water.

Authorities are searching for two men in the water south of Kent Island after a two-seat helicopter crashed into the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday, Coast Guard officials said.

Petty Officer Second Class Corinne Zilnicki told Patch that the Coast Guard received the report of the helicopter crash around 12:30 p.m. The call came from the brother of one of the men on the helicopter, Zilnicki said. The brother was boating in the area and saw the crash.

The Coast Guard lanched a 29-foot response boat crew as well as a boat crew from the Coast Guard Auxilliary.

UPDATE: 2 Killed In Helicopter Crash Into Chesapeake Bay

According to the FAA, a Guinbal Cabri G2GL helicopter crashed into the Chesapeake Bay approximately five miles south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at 12:10 p.m.

Officials are currently searching the area. Several other agencies are also responding to the scene.

Those agencies include the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Kent Island volunteer fire department, the Anne Arundel County fire department dive team, Maryland Natural Resources police, the Queen Anne fire department and the Talbot County fire department.

The Coast Guard said anyone who sees anything in the vicinity south of Kent Island is requested to contact Sector Maryland-National Capital Region on VHF-FM channel 16 or at 410-576-2525.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the helicopter crash is near Bloody Point. Capt. Brian Albert of the Maryland Natural Resources Police told the paper that officers responded around 12:30 p.m.

Natural resources police are working with other departments, including the Maryland State Police, to determine what happened, the Sun reported.
