Profs And Pints Brings Annapolis Talks On Vikings, Astronomy

Annapolis residents will be able to enjoy food and beverages and learn from the Naval Academy's top scholars.

Press release from Profs and Pints:

Sept. 6, 2022

Profs and Pints is excited to be staging in September its first round of talks by scholars from the U.S. Naval Academy, consistently ranked as one of the nation's top higher-education institutions and widely lauded for the quality of its undergraduate teaching. Annapolis residents, who rightly regard it the Naval Academy as a source of local pride, now will be able to learn from its top scholars in a bar with a beverage and plate of food in front of them. Sounds a lot easier than enlisting and having to wake up to 6:30 a.m. reveille and do lots of push-ups, doesn't it?

On tap are two talks focused on remarkable journeys—those taken by legendary Vikings who prowled the seas, and those taken by the James Webb Space Telescope and other instruments exploring the depths of the universe.

The professor giving the September 13th Viking talk, Dr. Jill Fitzgerald, will discuss medieval Icelandic legends and what they tell us about life at that time. The astrophysicists giving the September 20th telescope talk, Dr. Jeffrey Larsen and Dr. Christopher Morgan, will describe how these new instruments are changing not just our perspective of the universe but our assumptions about the laws of physics here on Earth.

Both talks will be given at the Trophy Room of the Graduate Annapolis hotel.
