Second Rabid Raccoon Found at Quiet Waters this Season
A rabid raccoon was found on a trail at Quiet Waters Park this week, health officials said.
Health officials are warning Annapolis residents that a rabid raccoon was found at Quiet Waters Park Tuesday.
The raccoon was found Nov. 5 at the park, off Harness Creek Trail, and later tested positive for rabies, according to a press release from the Anne Arundel Department of Health.
"Anyone who had contact with a raccoon should call the Anne Arundel County Department of Health without delay at 410-222-7256, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 443-481-3140 after business hours. Anyone whose pet was bitten or scratched by a raccoon should call County Animal Control at 410-222-8900," according to the release.
Another raccoon was found at the park in September, health officials reported.
Rabies is spread by being bitten or scratched by an infected animal, such as a raccoon, fox or bat. It can also be contracted from the animal's saliva if it comes into contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or any open wounds.
Rabies is a fatal disease and preventative treatment must be started immediately, according to the release.
