Survey: 98 Percent of Annapolis Recycles

A new poll conducted by the City of Annapolis concluded that 98 percent of residents surveyed participate in recycling.

The survey, distributed by the city's Department of Public Works, also showed that most residents want a bigger recycling container for their materials. The city's largest container, a 32 gallon bin, is used by more than half of the population.

A larger container with wheels and a lid proved extremely popular, with 92 percent voting in favor of it. The most popular size for that container was 64 gallon.

Based on the survey, the department will be placing orders for larger bins soon, according to a press release.

Department of Public Works Director David Jarrell said recycling has increased in the city by 15 percent since moving to once-per-week recycling.

"And we expect to have an increase likewise when we get the bigger containers," Jarrell said.

The city will order 500 of the larger containers this year, and they will be available on a first-come-first-served basis, Jarrell said.

The department will also be distributing information to educate residents on what's appropriate for the bins—it's a lot more than most people think, Jarrell said.
