Tornado Briefly Touched Down In Annapolis On Thursday: NWS

The tornado was recorded as severe storms and torrential rains pummeled Anne Arundel and surrounding counties.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An EF-0 tornado briefly touched down in Annapolis on Thursday as severe storms and torrential rain pummeled the region.

The National Weather Service on Friday confirmed the waterspout formed over Spa Creek around 2:45 p.m., passed briefly over the Severn Sailing Association marina at the northernmost point of Eastport, and then proceeded back over the mouth of the Severn River.

According to the National Weather Service, a witness at the marina provided the agency with a video of the waterspout as it moved ashore, blowing over a few trailers and stored small boats.

Additional video shared on social media showed the tornado near the Route 450 bridge as it moved offshore toward the mouth of the Severn River.

The tornado dissipated before reaching land on the other side of the river, and no other damage was reported.

National Weather Service forecasters said the small twister reached wind speeds of 65 mph and remained on the ground for less than a minute, covering approximately 0.1 miles.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

  • EF0: 65 to 85 mph
  • EF1: 86 to 110 mph
  • EF2: 111 to 135 mph
  • EF3: 136 to 165 mph
  • EF4: 166 to 200 mph
  • EF5.: 200+ mph

Severe thunderstorms pounded Maryland on Thursday afternoon, bringing flash flooding that closed roads, knocked out power, and prompted flood warnings and watches in some areas

A boy playing in stormwater died after flash flooding swept him away, reports said.

The boy was playing with friends about 5:20 p.m. in Mount Airy when the rainfall pushed him into a drainage pipe that led to a stormwater retention pond, Carroll County officials told WBAL. His body was found by a bystander, and first responders pronounced the child dead.
