Watch Annapolis Mayor Walk Plank into Creek

Mayor Josh Cohen walked off a plank into Spa Creek to make up for not opening the Market House on time last year.

Moments after emerging from Spa Creek, dripping wet and wearing a full business suit, Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen wore a hat saying: "It's Open," in celebration of the Market House's grand opening on Saturday.

Cohen walked a pirate ship plank into the creek of Ego Alley early Saturday morning to fulfill a commitment he made in 2012—if the Market House didn't open by October of that year, he'd take the plunge.

The Market House fully opened Saturday morning with a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony and a review of the history of Annapolis' open-market building, which dates back more than 300 years.

After the ribbon-cutting, Cohen was "arrested" by former Annapolis police chief Joseph Johnson and brought aboard a pirate ship parked along City Dock.

A crowd of hundreds of onlookers chanted: "Walk the plank," and counted down as Cohen stretched his arms to either side and dove in—suit and all.

A few moments after surfacing to cheers, Cohen yelled out: "Come on in, the water's great!"
