EDGEWATER, MD — Coconut Joe's Bar & Grill reopened Friday in Edgewater. The waterfront eatery overlooks the South River.

Coconut Joe's changed its concept in 2017. Under the same ownership, Coconut Joe's became The Pier Waterfront Bar & Grill.

The restaurant stopped operating as The Pier in December 2023. The eatery returned to its original Coconut Joe's tiki bar concept this weekend.

"We look forward to serving you over the 2024 Spring & Summer months ahead with great food, beverages, live music and our new 'Pirate Ship' sand filled play area for the kids!"

The reopening was especially exciting for customer Erin Douglas, who has fond memories of the restaurant.

"My husband and I had our 1st date here and we got married here!" Douglas said on Facebook. "So happy to come back!"

Coconut Joe's looks similar to its early days. Surfboards and tropical decor adorn the walls. Garage doors open up to the patio and the kids play area, which features a pirate ship in the sandpit.

There's still a dining room, high-tops and a double-sided indoor bar.

The two outdoor bars are also back. The upper-level outdoor bar is now covered with a full awning. It has roll-up windows and heaters for cold weather.

When summertime rolls around, Coconut Joe's has slips for boat docking.

The menu features everything from crab cakes and chicken Chesapeake to rice bowls and pizza. Other highlights include the crab dip, coconut shrimp and grilled salmon.

"You guys did a great job," Annapolis resident Brittany Gough said on Facebook. "It looks awesome! Bring on summer!"

Coconut Joe's opens daily at 11 a.m. at 48 South River Road.

Customers can visit coconutjoesmd.com or follow the business on Facebook for the live music schedule.

The restaurant is still hiring. Interested applicants can email their resume to cocojoes@comcast.net.

Correction: This story previously said Coconut Joe's closed to become The Pier Waterfront Bar & Grill. The restaurant stayed open but changed its name and concept. The Pier was not affiliated with the Pier 7 Resort Marina.
