Annette Lerner, who is worth an estimated $6.2 billion, is the richest person in Maryland, according to the Forbes 400 ranking of the wealthiest Americans released Tuesday. The Lerner family owns the Washington Nationals.

Overall, Maryland has six billionaires on the elite Forbes list. They’re worth a combined $27.5 billion.

America’s super-rich have never been wealthier. The 400 richest people in the country are worth a record $6.6 trillion — $1.2 trillion richer than they were last year, due mainly to surging stock markets and “AI mania," Forbes said.

It took a net worth of $1.7 billion to make the Forbes 400 a decade ago, and those with fortunes of $3.8 billion were “comfortably within the top half of the ranking,” Forbes said, noting that now, “that lofty sum is the minimum required.”

Annette Lerner ranks as the No. 239 wealthiest person in the country.

Forbes said Annette Lerner lent $250 to her husband, Ted Lerner, in 1952 to start a real estate company. Lerner Enterprises is now one of the largest real estate owners in the Washington, D.C area.

Ted Lerner died in February 2023. He left his wife and her children as the heirs of his estate.

The family has owned the Nationals since 2006. Ted Lerner's son, Mark, has been the team's control person since 2018.

Forbes said the family donates to charities including Children's National Hospital in D.C., George Washington University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
