BROOKLYN PARK, MD — A former high school football and basketball player died in a Wednesday car crash in Anne Arundel County, a report said.

Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Anthony Wayne Hinton III of Glen Burnie. An unidentified 17-year-old male was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries from the wreck, officers said.

The Capital said Hinton, nicknamed "Manman," was a standout student-athlete at Glen Burnie High School until his 2023 graduation. Coaches remembered Hinton for his confidence and clutch shots that prolonged the Gophers basketball playoff run during his senior year, The Capital reported.

Hinton was driving a 2011 Infiniti G37 north on Ritchie Highway when he lost control of the sedan, police said.

Officers said the car crossed the raised center median and the southbound travel lanes before leaving the roadway and hitting a tree.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department pronounced Hinton dead on the scene, authorities said.

Medics drove the injured passenger to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said.

Officers are still investigating.

“They all loved him,” Glen Burnie football coach Alec Lemon told The Capital, reflecting on Hinton's lone season on the Gophers gridiron. “He always found a way to be positive.”

The Capital said Hinton had just finished his first year at Virginia's Shenandoah University, where he played football. The 6-foot, 205-pound Hinton was a defensive lineman for the Hornets.
