'Selfless' Anne Arundel Mom Goes Extra Mile To Serve Others

ANNE ARUNDEL, MD— Moms do so much for everyone around them. We try to celebrate them all year long, but Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to shout it from the rooftops and post it on Patch: Mom rocks!

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize the awesome moms and mom figures in communities like yours.

This submission comes from John P. Smolen who nominated Jenny Smolen of Anne Arundel.

What makes this mom extra special?

Jenny is active in her daughter's school community, her son's high school community, her church community and her neighborhood in ways that go above and beyond. She chaperones the overnight trips. She runs the 5K when the school, church or charity puts on a race. She volunteers to decorate for the dance. She serves at the picnic that she helps plan (and she's the one, selflessly, taking out the trash). She does the filming for club tryouts. She volunteers to drive people home. She hosts the pre-dance pictures and ensures there's food. She makes the brownies for the bake sale. She lets out the neighbor's dog and mows their lawn while they're away. She invites them over for holiday dinners. She not only goes to the track meet, she volunteers to work the event.

When there is an opportunity to be others-centered, to make an experience better for someone else, to do the "extra thing," she does it. One but typical example: She's holding the umbrella above the high school dance couple taking pictures outside while it's raining.

Why do you feel this mom deserves the spotlight?

She is invested in being a reliable, loving, solid foundation not only for her own children for but others' children when a proxy mother will make their lives a little bit better. She is selfless and humble, and it's precisely these kinds of mothers who deserve to be recognized.
