Authorities said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

“This is a truly tragic moment,” stated Cmdr. Rob Concepcion, the chief of response for Coast Guard Sector Maryland–National Capital Region. “Our hearts ache for the missing swimmer’s family and friends. Despite the stormy weather and the Coast Guard being understaffed right now, we had numerous crews scouring the area in hopes of bringing the swimmer home safely.”

The Coast Guard issued an urgent notice to boaters alerting them of the missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard then deployed a 45-foot response boat from Curtis Bay and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Atlantic City, New Jersey to search the area.

The search also included:

  • Anne Arundel County Fire Department fireboat crew
  • Anne Arundel County Police Department responders
  • Maryland Natural Resources Police responders
  • Baltimore City Fire Department responders
