2 Winter Storm Threats In MD This Week: National Weather Service

Winter weather may disrupt travel this week, according to the National Weather Service forecast for Maryland.

MARYLAND — Two threats of wintry weather are on the horizon for Maryland this week, according to the National Weather Service. A hazardous weather outlook issued by the agency calls for strong winds Monday, followed by two winter storm threats later in the week.

Temperatures are expected to drop more than 30 degrees Monday, from the high 60s to the low 30s. Rain and snow showers are possible Monday, and so are powerful winds.

Gusty winds Monday may lead to isolated instances of wind damage, according to the hazardous weather outlook.

After 9:30 a.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority placed the Bay Bridge under wind warnings, issued for winds over 30 mph. Drivers of the following vehicles should use extra caution while crossing the Bay Bridge: house trailers, box trailers, motorcycles, vehicles with roof-mount racks containing cargo or any other vehicle that may be subject to high winds.

A gale warning is in effect for Maryland waters until 1 a.m. Tuesday calling for boaters to stay in port, change course or secure their vessels due to the hazardous conditions.

Those in northern, central and western Maryland should be aware of a "slight winter storm threat Tuesday night into Wednesday," forecasters said. Snow is possible Tuesday, with the chance of snow increasing through Wednesday night.

"If the threat materializes, it may cause travel disruptions," the National Weather Service stated in a hazardous weather outlook, which applies to these areas:

  • Baltimore (northern)
  • Carroll County
  • Frederick County
  • Harford County (northwest)
  • Howard County (northwest)
  • Washington County

The hazardous weather outlook also applies to parts of northern and central Virginia and eastern West Virginia.

A "slight severe winter threat" is also in the forecast Saturday into Saturday night, with possible scattered severe thunderstorms, according to the outlook.

The weekend storm threat applies to these areas:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore (southern)
  • Calvert County
  • Cecil County
  • Charles County
  • Harford County (southeast)
  • Howard County (central and southeast)
  • Montgomery County (central and southeast)
  • Prince George's County

Here is the National Weather Service forecast for the Baltimore-Washington area:

  • Monday: High near 66 and low of 30 degrees. Scattered showers are possible before 11 a.m. Then there's an 80 percent chance of showers, mainly from 4 to 8 p.m. Wind gusts may be as high as 40 mph. Less than 0.1 inch rain is possible. There is a chance of snow showers from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. with little to no accumulation expected.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 41 and low near 30. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
  • Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with a high near 39 and low around 25 degrees. A chance of snow after 4 a.m. Rain and snow are likely before 2 p.m., followed by rain from 2 to 5 p.m.; rain and snow are likely again after 5 p.m., then snow is possible before 8 p.m. There's a 60 percent chance of precipitation.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 43 and low around 32.
  • Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53 and low around 43. There's a 30 percent chance of rain after 8 p.m.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66 and low around 46. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent during the day and 60 percent at night.
  • Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 57 and 50 percent chance of rain.
