Unattended Candle Left Burning In Edgewood Bedroom Sparks Fire Causing $500K Damage
An Edgewood home sustained $500K in damage and loss of contents after an unattended candle left burning in a bedroom sparked a fire.

EDGEWOOD, MD — Three adults and a dog have been displaced after a fire broke out at their Edgewood home Tuesday.
The Abingdon Fire Company was called to the home around 5:35 p.m., which is located in the 3000 block of Ebbtide Drive. Firefighters arrived to find the two-story, single family home with flames shooting out of a second-floor bedroom. According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, a candle or incense left burning unattended sparked a fire in a second floor bedroom. The mother and her two adult children at the home heard the smoke alarm and attempted to extinguish the fire with a pot of water, but it spread quickly. They escaped, called 911 and then rescued their dog from inside the home.
Investigators said the two open bedroom windows sparked the fire to spread quickly, extending past the open windows and to the soffit and attic of the home. Almost 40 firefighters spent 15 minutes battling the blaze, which they were able to prevent from spreading to neighboring houses. The state fire marshal's office has estimated the loss of contents and structure damage at $500,000. Harford County Disaster Assistance is helping the family, the state fire marshal's office stated.
