Construction Worker Tumbles Into Basement Foundation, Flown To Hospital

A construction worker who fell into a basement foundation was rescued with a rope system and flown to the hospital in serious condition.

JOPPA, MD — A construction worker fell more than eight feet down inside a new house foundation, landing inside a confined space. Due to his injuries, volunteer firefighters helped rescue the man with a rope system.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Tuesday at a property located in the 1400 block of Philadelphia Road. The special operations team with the Harford County Department of Emergency Services responded, along with the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company. Emergency workers found a concrete truck that had tipped over, causing the worker to fall inside the home's foundation that was under construction, according to the fire company.

Emergency workers from the Aberdeen Fire Department and The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company responded as well, along with the special operations team from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department were called in to help stabilize the cement truck and extricate the construction worker from the basement foundation.

The man was flown by Maryland State Police - Aviation Command to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition. The exact cause of the work place accident is being investigated by the Maryland Department of Occupational Safety and Health.
