Coffee Date Ends With Stabbing At Westfield Montgomery Mall

A Gaithersburg man was arrested for stabbing an acquaintance while getting coffee inside the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda.

BETHESDA, MD — A Gaithersburg man was arrested for stabbing a man inside the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda Sunday evening.

Police said Jeffrey Lewis Sweeney-Grant stabbed an acquaintance while meeting him for coffee in the mall's lower level at about 4:47 p.m. Sunday.

The 37-year-old victim was found suffering from an apparent stab wounds to his torso, police said. He was transported to a local trauma center for surgery and now appears to be in stable condition.

Sweeney-Grant "identified himself as the suspect to members of the mall security force," police said in a statement. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

The motivation for the stabbing remains under investigation, police said.
