BETHESDA, MD — A Bethesda man is dead after a carbon monoxide leak at his home Wednesday morning, officials said.

Spokesperson Pete Piringer said crews responded to a medical emergency at a home in the 1000 block of Parkwood Dr. at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A family member first called 911 and performed life-saving instruction in the home before first responders arrived, Piringer said. Responders then found three unconscious adults and rushed them to the hospital.

Hazmat crews immediately detected elevated carbon monoxide levels likely from the furnace/boiler in the basement area, Piringer told Patch. The water heater "seemed to be needing some adjustments as well," officials said.

The man was in possible cardiac arrest, officials said at the time of the leak. It is believed that his bedroom was located closest to the furnace, so "time and exposure" led him to suffer potential life-threatening injuries.

“One of the symptoms [of carbon monoxide poisoning] of course, your thought process is not clear, and so by that time, it might be too late to recognize what the problem is," Piringer told ABC 7.

The entire home is under renovation, officials said. The occupants were in the lower level of the home.
