Montgomery County Council Invites Students To Town Hall

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – The Montgomery County Council wants to know what is on the minds of younger residents when it hosts its seventh annual Town Hall Meeting for youth on November 29 at the Council Office Building in Rockville. The meeting, in the Council’s Third Floor Hearing Room, will start at 7 p.m.

A pre-meeting reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the building’s second-floor cafeteria. At the reception, students will have a chance to meet with council members and talk with them in an informal setting. Also at the reception, from 6 to 6:30 p.m., council members will recognize the finalists for the council member for a Day Challenge and council member Craig Rice, who serves a chair of the Council’s Education Committee, will announce the winner of the challenge. The remainder of the reception is for students to visit with council members. For students traveling to the meeting by car, free parking will be available by entering the Council parking garage from the Fleet Street entrance.

Students from public and private schools from around the County and students from local colleges are encouraged to express their views on any aspect of the Montgomery County Public Schools system, programs that impact students, or public policy issues that impact their daily lives. They also can ask questions of the council members. Students can also earn student service learning hours for attending the Youth Town Hall meeting.

The meeting will be broadcast live on County Cable Montgomery and rebroadcast at various times in the weeks following the meeting. The meeting will also be streamed on Facebook Live and YouTube.
Students will also be encouraged to share their thoughts on the meeting and ask questions via Twitter and Facebook Live using the hashtag #MoCoYouth. Susan Kenedy, a producer for the County station, will moderate the meeting.

The Council is composed of President Roger Berliner, Vice President Hans Riemer and council members Marc Elrich, Nancy Floreen, Tom Hucker, Sidney Katz, George Leventhal, Nancy Navarro, and Craig Rice. Council President Berliner said that the youth town hall meetings have become learning experiences for both the council members and the students.

“Youth in Montgomery County care about local government,” said Council President Roger Berliner. “Their voices and perspectives are important to many major decisions the Council makes, especially when it comes to education. The Council’s Youth Town Hall gives council members a chance to hear directly from students about how they view the important issues facing our County.”
