Montgomery County School Board Results: Silvestre Leads At-Large Race

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — In Montgomery County's Board of Education primary elections on Tuesday, incumbent Karla Silvestre was leading the at-large race, Grace Rivera-Oven was leading District 1 and Julie Yang was leading District 3 as of Wednesday morning.

Valerie Coll and Brenda Wolff were running close in the District 5 Board of Election race, with Coll holding a slight edge.

Members of the Board of Education are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis. Elections are held in even-numbered years. Four seats are up for election in 2022.

Only school board races with three or more candidates for one seat have primary elections. This year, all four seats up for grabs on the Montgomery County Board of Education have three or more candidates.

The top two vote-getters in the July 19 primary for the at-large and the District 1, 3 and 5 seats will advance to the general election.

Election day polling places were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19. Any mail-in ballots for the primaries had to be postmarked or placed in the appropriate box by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19.

Election officials closed the lines to vote Tuesday at 8 p.m. Anybody in line by that time was allowed to vote. Polling locations will close when everybody in line has voted.

Maryland will only release the results for statewide races when every polling place in the state has closed. That means there are not yet any results available in the governor's race.

When Will The Results Be Certified?

The Maryland State Board of Elections expects to certify the final results during the week of Aug. 8. Officials will announce the unofficial early voting and election day results on July 19, but they still have to count the mail-in, dropbox and provisional ballots.

State law says these tallies must start and end on specific dates after election day. That means the final and official results will come a few weeks after voters hit the polls.

In Montgomery County, a Board of Education district means a geographic area in which an elected member of the Board must live. In Montgomery County, there are five district members and two at-large members of the board. However, all board members are elected by the county as a whole.

The student member of the board is elected by all Montgomery County Public Schools secondary students.

The District 1 seat on the Montgomery County Board of Education will have a new representative for the first time in more than 15 years, since incumbent Judy Docca did not file for re-election.
