5 Prince George's Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season

Giving Tuesday falls on Dec. 3 this year. It's a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Here are a few to consider.

BOWIE, MD— If you’re like many of your Prince George's County neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in Prince George's County.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

1. Independence Now: Since 1994, Independence Now has been committed to building a more inclusive world where everyone, regardless of ability, can live independent, fulfilling lives.
2. Mission of Love Charities: Mission of Love Charities persists in its commitment to serve homeless and low-income families and individuals in the community.
3. SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George's County, Inc.: The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc. (PGSPCA) is a nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. At our clinic, we offer low-cost vaccinations and low-cost and free spay/neuter services, and have an active dog and cat adoption program.
4. Sarah's House: Sarah’s House is a supportive housing program offering emergency shelter and project-based supportive housing with an array of other services for families experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. Serving up to 125 people daily, half of whom are children, our goal is to affect positive change in families by providing a range of services and support.
5. SEED Food Pantry: Sowing Empowerment and Economic Development (SEED), is a 501(c)3 community nonprofit organization operating in Prince George’s County, Maryland and Wayne County, Michigan. Collectively serving more than 18,000 children and adults annually, SEED provides food, education, and training while promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment directly to low-to-moderate-income families.
