Firefighters Make Dramatic Apartment Rescue In Adelphi (Update)

The fire roared through a six-story apartment building Wednesday evening. Two residents and a firefighter were hurt.

ADELPHI, MD — Prince George’s County firefighters pulled residents out of a burning apartment building Wednesday evening, according to local media reports.

Fire department spokesman Mark Brady said a two-alarm fire in the 9200 block of New Hampshire Avenue was mostly extinguished after a 30-minute firefight. Firefighters using ladder trucks rescued several people from balconies.

Two residents of the apartment where the fire originated were taken to an area hospital burn unit with non-life-threatening burn injuries.

A firefighter was also taken to a burn unit with smoke inhalation injuries.

NBC Washington reported that the fire in a six-story apartment building at the location in Adelphi appeared to start in one unit and quickly spread to the others.

Footage taken from a news helicopter showed firefighters on the sixth floor pulling residents out of the burning building.

The top floor of the apartment was “fully involved” in the fire, WTOP reported.
