If ICE Visits Prince George's County Public Schools: What To Know

Prince George's County Public Schools has mapped out protocol to be followed by school staff and administrators if ICE officers visit.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — At Prince George's County Public Schools, there are more than 150 countries and languages represented across the district. So with the directive issued Jan. 20 by the Department of Homeland Security allowing for immigration enforcement actions to happen in "sensitive areas," including in schools and at bus stops, school leaders have spoken out.

"As we stand on the brink of change, we recognize that moments of transition can bring both hope and uncertainty. At Prince George’s County Public Schools, our strength lies in the rich diversity of our students, families and staff," said Millard House II, superintendent of PGCPS.

"In moments of uncertainty, it is more important than ever to reaffirm our values. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every child – regardless of background, language or country of origin – receives a high-quality education in a safe, welcoming environment. We understand that some families may feel unsettled right now. Please know that PGCPS stands in solidarity with you. We are here to ensure that all families understand their rights and know that they are part of a school community that cares deeply about their well-being," House II said.

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman stated in a release that the directive issued earlier this week is designed to thwart individuals' attempts to hide in schools and churches to avoid arrest.

“This action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws and catch criminal aliens—including murders and rapists—who have illegally come into our country. Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement and instead trusts them to use common sense," stated Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman.

House stated in his address to the community that every child has the right to a free public school education, regardless of immigration status.

"Our commitment to this fundamental principle is unwavering," he said. "We are proud to be a community that celebrates cultural differences, fosters inclusion and recognizes the immeasurable contributions of all who call PGCPS home. PGCPS does not ask about or disclose immigration status. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all students and their families, as required by federal and state law. As always, families may restrict what information PGCPS publicly shares about their student."

If a parent or guardian is detained while their child is at school, House said that school staff will keep students safe until an authorized adult can pick up the child.

"We recommend taking this opportunity to update your child’s emergency contact information at the school or in ParentVUE. All parents, regardless of their immigration status, should list emergency contacts who can pick up their children in case of an emergency, the school district said.
