Man Who Fatally Shot Grandmother In Town For Funeral Sentenced

A man on probation who fatally shot an El Salvadoran grandmother in town for a funeral has been sentenced.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A judge has sentenced a 38-year-old man above the guidelines in the fatal shooting of a grandmother who was visiting family in Prince George's County.

State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy argued for the maximum sentence because of what she called the "heinous nature of the crime."

“This was our worst nightmare,” she said during a news conference. “To have someone shooting randomly with no regard, is dangerous and jeopardized the lives of so many and in this case left a beloved grandmother dead.”

In March of 2023, 62-year-old Lidia Chinchilla DeCarrillo had arrived from El Salvador to attend her grandson’s funeral, who had died in a car accident. Her granddaughter had taken her to visit a relative while in Maryland and while outside a house on Drumm Avenue in Capitol Heights, Troy Medley got out of another vehicle and opened fire, hitting DeCarrillo in the back with gunfire. She was taken to the hospital where she died.

Medley was convicted by a jury of all charges in December 2024. Medley was sentenced to 85 years in prison - 40 years for second-degree murder, 25 years for first-degree assault, 20 years for use of a gun during a violent crime – all to be served consecutively. Braveboy noted that Medley was on probation at the time of the shooting. He must serve half of his sentence before he's eligible for parole.

“They didn’t deserve this, and none of these family members deserved it,” Braveboy said.
